Thank you for standing with the people of Syria and Türkiye

UNHCR is on the ground delivering life-saving assistance to families affected by the earthquake.

On Monday 6 February, two large earthquakes hit south-eastern Türkiye and northern Syria. The quakes have claimed more than 40,000 lives, displaced millions of people, and caused massive destruction to homes and infrastructure.

What is UNHCR doing to help?

Thanks to you, UNHCR teams and partners are on the ground in Syria and Türkiye. They are working around the clock to deliver life-saving assistance to families who have lost everything and are now facing freezing winter conditions.

Syria

5.3 million people have been shelter-affected by the earthquake. This is a hammer blow for Syrians who have endured almost 12 years of war. Many were living in tents, flimsy shelters and partially destroyed buildings that offered little protection from the quakes.

UNHCR is delivering emergency aid to those in need. With your support, we are providing life-saving supplies such as tents, plastic sheeting, thermal blankets, sleeping mats and clothing.

In Syria, UNHCR has delivered*:

  • 27,000 survival kits to affected families in Aleppo, Latakia, Tartous, Hama and Idleb
  • 15,200 winter jackets and 5,100 winter clothing kits to families in Aleppo, Tartous and Homs
  • 1,300 hygiene kits (with shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary napkins) in Tartous and Idleb
  • Protection services for 40,200 people in Aleppo

Türkiye

More than one million people are in temporary shelter following the earthquakes. Both Turkish people and Syrian refugees living in the community were hit hard.

Working with the Turkish authorities and other partners, UNHCR is providing tents and emergency supplies to families who have lost their homes.

In Türkiye, UNHCR:

  • Is providing core relief items for temporary accommodation centres, including blankets, mattresses, kitchen sets and warm clothing
  • Dispatched 9,600 tents and 600 tent accessories from existing stockpiles, with more on the way
  • Dispatched 4,000 high-thermal blankets from our warehouse in Dubai
UNHCR distributes relief items, including thermal blankets, to families staying at a mosque in Aleppo, Syria.
