Generous donors have helped UNHCR reach 1.6 million people fleeing deadly attacks in Ukraine, including people trapped within the country and those who have fled across borders.
Inside Ukraine, many families in hard-hit areas remain cut off from basic supplies, including food, water and medicine. Heavy shelling has destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and other vital infrastructure. At the same time, refugees – mostly women, children and the elderly – are searching for safety in Europe after fleeing the war with little more than the clothes on their backs.

UNHCR is now working with its humanitarian partners to prepare for the oncoming winter.
“Winters in Ukraine are very harsh and severe, extremely cold,” said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “So we must do everything possible to prevent the cold of winter from becoming the next challenge for people that already have to face so much in their lives.”

The majority of funds raised by Australia for UNHCR are directed to UNHCR’s emergency operations, providing the ready funds and resources to respond quickly and effectively in situations of crisis and disaster.
